World Environment Day 2025

The School of Environmental Studies (SES) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) successfully organised a day-long event on World Environment Day 2025, aligning with the global theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.” The event brought together environmental leaders, academic scholars, student volunteers, and community members to promote awareness and inspire collective action against plastic pollution.

Inaugural Session

The program commenced at 10:00 AM with a warm welcome by Prof. (Dr.) V. Sivanandan Achari, Dean of the Faculty of Science, CUSAT. He emphasized the significance of sustainable science and university-led interventions in addressing plastic pollution.

The presidential address was delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Suja P. Devipriya, Director of SES, who underlined SES’s commitment to sustainability and the role of youth in bringing about environmental transformation.

The event was formally inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Junaid Bushiri, Honorable Vice Chancellor of CUSAT. In his address, he highlighted the urgent need for academic institutions to lead grassroots initiatives in tackling plastic waste.

Expert Sessions (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM)

The technical session featured inspiring talks by industry leaders and sustainability advocates:

  • Mrs. Juliana Biju, Founder of Rewago, shared insights into innovative recycling models and community-level engagement for plastic reuse.

  • Mr. Jakariya Joy, CEO of Northamps, discussed business models that promote circular economy practices in plastic management.

  • Mr. Sooraj Abraham & Mr. Mujeeb Muhammed from PlanatEarth presented their community-driven campaigns for plastic reduction and sustainable alternatives.

The interactive Q&A sessions following the talks allowed students and faculty to engage in meaningful dialogue with the experts.

 Plastic Clean Drive (2:00 PM – 3:00 PM)

In a hands-on effort to reduce local plastic pollution, participants actively took part in a clean-up drive in and around the campus. The initiative saw enthusiastic participation from students and staff, promoting responsible waste disposal and community engagement.

FloraFest at SES (3:00 PM – 4:00 PM)

The day concluded with FloraFest, a celebration of native plant diversity and green living. Students and visitors explored exhibits on sustainable gardening, seed exchanges, and plant adoption. It was a vibrant finale that underscored the value of reconnecting with nature.

Participation & Impact

The event witnessed the participation of over 100 attendees, including students, researchers, and faculty. The initiative not only raised awareness on the global issue of plastic pollution but also fostered a sense of local responsibility and action among the university community.

Conclusion

World Environment Day 2025 at CUSAT served as a powerful reminder of the importance of sustainability and collective action. The School of Environmental Studies reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and looks forward to continuing its efforts in building a greener future.
